I am very familiar with pollution in the oceans. So, I came into this article expecting information I'm already aware of. But, I learned a few things that shocked me. Such as, the fact that oceans have been affected by humans since Roman times. I would have thought that humans began making a negative impact on the ocean and its environment much later in time. For example, in the early 1900's. Since that is when plastic was invented. However, I didn't realize that plastic wasn't the only thing hurting oceans and beaches. Things like pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers, detergents, oil, and sewage can get into the ocean and harm the life.
One thing I come across often is, the fact that what is being put into the ocean, are being put into us. If you think about it, it's all a massive chain of chemicals, pollution, and poison. When small creatures such as krill, take in these things, it is transferring to the larger animals such as small fish when they eat the krill. Of course, we eat some of the fish who take these dangerous things in, so that means, that we are ALSO taking these toxins into our own bodies. Reading the headline, "Noise Pollution", made me contemplate what noise pollution could even mean before I read the section of this article. Maybe marine life being disturbed by moving speed boats? Then, I got into it and discovered the meaning behind the title. It partially means what I had predicted. The waves go back to the animals in large bodies of water. Especially when these things are persistant, it can aggravate the animals. Sometimes, it isn't always man-made noise, though. It can also involve things such as hurricanes. Many of these things can disrupt natural living conditions for these animals. When things such as whales need to migrate, sometimes it doesn't help with the process they need to survive. As of now, people are beginning to realize that what we are doing, are harming the animals, so luckily, the government has been putting new laws into effect. Dumping harmful substances into oceans or any body of water is now illegal. This, I am extremely pleased with. This means that even if the problem doesn't go away immediately, effort is being put into making pollution an extinct thing. NOT our sea creatures.

Reading this title made me hopeful for the future. Maybe this could be the future of plastic recycling. The fact that famous brands are making them make it all the better. The process that goes into making these shoes is pretty interesting. Recyclers have to work down the plastic into small fibers in order to shape it the right way. I feel like recycling plastic into wearable items is a great idea. This idea needs to be made into other items so that we can be motivated to use most of this recycled plastic.
When I find articles online about something I find essential to what I am researching, I will post the link and my commentary and thoughts on a blog post.
This article began with sad news. A sperm whale had been washed ashore in Indonesia and when people came to investigate, they found 13 pounds of plastic in its stomach. It makes me really upset when I read things like this. I always like to think to myself, that we can turn all of this around and change our habits for the better. But, at the rate this is going, we may be making it worse, no matter how many people are trying to help. This article is a perfect example of that. The plastic may not have been the cause of death, but it very well could have been.
Indonesia is a huge contributor to the worldwide plastic issue. According to a 2015 report in the journal, Science, Indonesia is the world’s second biggest polluter involving plastic. |
